Duke Energy Admits to Sham Trades on ICE

Duke Energy told federal regulators Tuesday it participated in round-trip, or “wash,” trading activities, but said it did not do so “for the purpose” of inflating reported revenues or influencing prices. Nevertheless, the trades did result in a relatively small gain in revenues, the company said, while also admitting to a small number of bogus transactions that were intended to boost trading volumes.

Companies Defend Hedging Activities in Texas Pilot Deregulation

Several electricity providers that participated in the Texas pilot deregulation program last summer admitted Wednesday to the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC) that they had overscheduled power in the first few weeks of the pilot, costing the state $29 million. Reliant Energy Services, TXU Electric, American Electric Power Service, Mirant Americas Energy Marketing, Constellation Power Source and another unnamed company are being investigated by PUC to see whether they should be fined for hedging — even though it apparently was allowed at the time.

Depending on who you ask, KN Energy’s (KN) choice gas program inNebraska was either a raving success or a seriously flawedoperation. Results indicate 100,000 people participated in thetwo-year program, which concluded last month. While KN was pleasedwith the turn-out, other involved parties have joined together in alawsuit accusing the Colorado-based company of breaking antitrustlaws and creating a monopoly by setting up unfair market advantagesfor itself and its affiliate, KN Gas Services.
