Deregulation Still Hitting AGL Hard

The effects of deregulation are still being felt by AGLResources, the parent of the now-totally unbundled Atlanta GasLight, as 151 employees, or 7% of the workforce, has been cut sinceAugust, the company said recently. No more layoffs are expected,although the company did say it is always looking for ways toimprove efficiency.

Gas-fired megawatts were in play last week as the parent ofArizona Public Service and part-owner of the Palo Verde NuclearGenerating Station pledged to put a massive 2,120 MW naturalgas-fired plant beside its nuclear facility; Texas Utilities putsix gas-fired generating plants (3,116 MW) on the market; andCalpine Corp. announced a new 800 MW cogen plant in Baytown, TX,and completed the purchase of another 500 MW development project inCalifornia. DPL Inc., parent of the Dayton Power and Light Co., was recentlyselected by the Indiana Farm Bureau as its energy partner, thecompany said last week. Under the agreement, DPL Energy will be theenergy provider of choice for the Indiana Farm Bureau and itsmembership, supplying natural gas and other energy services. Thisannouncement comes on the heels of DPL and the Ohio Farm Bureaurenewing their eight-year relationship. The Indiana Farm Bureau hasrepresented Hoosier farmers since 1919 and is now the largestagricultural organization in Indiana with more than 272,000members. It provides its members with a number of value-addedservices that include insurance, accounting, education, and nownatural gas through DPL Energy. DPL currently manages approximately25 Bcf of natural gas annually.
