NRG Buys 1,875 MW of Generation from Conectiv

Conectiv is selling 1,875 MW of fossil-fired generation andrelated assets that are owned by its subsidiaries, Atlantic CityElectric Co. and Delmarva Power & Light, to NRG Energy ofMinneapolis, a subsidiary of Northern States Power, for $800million. The deal includes a power sales contract at closing, inwhich Delmarva will buy 500 MW from NRG.

Allegheny Keeps Growing Distribution Business

Allegheny Energy’s delivery business, Allegheny Power, plans to buy Mountaineer Gas Co. (MGC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Energy Corp. of America (ECA), for $323 million, including assumption of $100 million in debt. The deal would give Allegheny its second gas distribution system, assuming the previously announced plan to acquire UtiliCorp’s West Virginia Power division goes through.

GPM Buying Kinder Morgan NM Gathering Assets

Kinder Morgan Inc. agreed to sell the capital stock of MidCon Gas Products of New Mexico Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary, to GPM Gas Corp., a unit of Phillips Petroleum, for $20 million in cash. Closing is expected by year-end. MidCon Gas Products owns the Big Eddy and Logans Draw gathering systems in Eddy County, NM. The combined systems include 159 miles of four- to ten-inch pipe with average throughput of 50 MMcf/d. Richard D. Kinder, CEO, said the sale is part of Houston-based Kinder Morgan’s back to basics strategy to divest of non-core assets. Sale proceeds will reduce debt.

Petal Answer’s Storage Expansion Questions

Petal Gas Storage Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Crystal GasStorage Inc., filed its second application with FERC to add 3.6 Bcfof storage capacity to its Nos. 6 and 7 salt caverns in ForrestCounty, MS, last week. The first application, filed in July, wasdenied by FERC because it lacked detail.

Enron Unit Buys Las Vegas Power Facility

Southwest Power LLC, an entity owned partly by Enron bought LasVegas Cogeneration LP and SUNCO Ltd. from The United Co. Las VegasCogeneration owns a 50 MW combined cycle power plant in North LasVegas. Designated as a qualifying facility under the PublicUtilities Regulatory Policy Act of 1978, the plant delivers powerunder contract to Nevada Power while SUNCO serves as the plant’sthermal host.

Sonat Closing Offices, Affecting 160 Employees

Sonat Exploration Co. of Houston, a wholly owned subsidiary ofSonat Inc. announced that it will close its Tyler, TX, and OklahomaCity offices on or shortly after Oct. 31. The action is part of aplan to improve the efficiency of the company’s exploration andproduction business. Following the office closures, SonatExploration will conduct all operations out of its main office inHouston.

Columbia Petroleum is a wholly ownedsubsidiary of Columbia Propane, an affiliate of Columbia EnergyGroup. Richland, PA-based Columbia Petroleum acquired the assets ofCarlos R. Leffler, Inc. and certain affiliates on May 11 andcurrently serves 36,000 customers in Pennsylvania, Delaware, NewJersey, Maryland, and Virginia. Schalk’s most recent position waspresident, retail services for Agway, Inc. in Syracuse, NY.
