Cash Prices Strengthen on Storage and Screen

Prices at most points increased yesterday as influences fromstorage plays and a rising futures screen overcame a lack ofseasonal cold weather in major market areas. In general, upticks ofa few cents were the most common in the West, Rockies, Gulf Coastand Midcontinent. The Northeast, however, continued the fall itstarted on Monday, as many points in the region lost anywhere fromabout a nickel to more than a dime.

Maritimes Inks Deal with Nova Scotia Indians

The Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline overcame a significantpolitical hurdle last week, signing an agreement with protestingNova Scotia Indians that smoothes the way for deliveries of 450MMcf/d of Sable Island gas to begin by the end of the year. Theagreement with the Assembly of the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefscovers a wide variety of environmental and socio-economic programsgiving native Indians a head start on industry-related jobs andtraining and ensures that Indians on a Mi’kmaq reserve will be thefirst Atlantic Canadians to receive gas. The National Energy Boardadded its final stamp of approval.

Columbia Results Improve, But E&P, Marketing Struggle

Columbia Energy Group barely overcame warmer than normaltemperatures, weak gas prices and higher marketing costs during thefirst quarter to post a 2% increase in earnings. The companyreported first quarter 1999 earnings of $150.4 million, or $1.81per share, up from $147.5 million or $1.77 per share in 1Q98.

Columbia Energy Group barely overcame warmer than normaltemperatures, weak gas prices and higher marketing costs during thefirst quarter to post a 2% increase in earnings. The companyreported first quarter 1999 earnings of $150.4 million, or $1.81per share, up $2.9 million, or four cents per share, from $147.5million or $1.77 per share in the 1998 first quarter. Strongperformances by its regulated transmission, storage anddistribution operations, as well as its propane, power generationand LNG activities were offset by continued difficulties inmarketing and exploration and production.
