Very little gas changed hands on Friday as many traders were displaced by the hurricane, while others stood by watching and waiting for some news about the impact on Gulf production and operations. Most business was done on Thursday for a four-day period (Friday-Monday). There was some choppy intraday business, and, aside from high quotes in the Northeast and Gulf Coast, prices generally reflected the weakness of the futures market on Friday. Near month futures fell 46.6 cents to end the day at $12.324.

Modest Firmness Mixes With Mostly Lower Prices

A majority of points were moderately softer Wednesday, although quite a few others were flat to as much as about a nickel higher. An impending decline in power generation load as cooler weather returns to the Midwest and Northeast starting Thursday were cited as the primary cause of declines ranging from 2-3 cents to nearly 20 cents. Most of the dips were in single digits.

CAISO, Others Key to CA Electric Market Reform, S&P Says

Noting that California’s energy markets are “markedly more stable” than only a few years ago, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services released an analysis last week that warned that a return to instability is possible, given the state’s continued power transmission grid limitations and the prospect for a shortfall in generation in the next few summers. “A measure of uncertainty remains in the California markets,” S&P concluded.
