Mixed Signals for California’s Large-Scale Solar

Without the fanfare six years ago when multi-billion-dollar contracts were signed with major utilities, two large-scale solar thermal projects in California have been sold and their 20-year offtake utility contracts canceled. This comes at a time when Congress and the Obama administration are proposing to cut federal dollars related to renewable energy development and investment banks have become skeptical toward the green energy space, particularly solar.

Northeast Plunges Lead Price Drops at All Points

There were a few holdouts for higher prices on Wednesday, but the verdict was unanimous Thursday: declines across the board, including several multi-dollar plunges in the Northeast. As expected, this week’s burst of cold proved to be relatively brief. Repsol recently received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatargas under a multi-year agreement at the Canaport LNG terminal in Saint John, NB. The nearly 6 trillion Btu cargo arrived on a Q-Max LNG tanker, the largest LNG tanker in the world. Under the supply agreement Qatargas is to deliver LNG to Canaport using both Q-Flex and Q-Max ships, which have capacity to carry the equivalent of approximately 5.6 and 4.6 Bcf, respectively. The arrival of the Q-Max marked the berthing of Canaport LNG’s 37th ship, including three Q-Flexes, received at the terminal since its commissioning in June, 2009, Repsol said. The terminal has received LNG from Trinidad and Tobago, Egypt, Norway, Peru and Qatar.

Alliance New Services to Target Shale Plays

With shipper contracts expiring in 2015, Alliance Pipeline Ltd. plans to develop receipt and short-haul services that take advantage of the pipeline’s location near developing gas shale plays in British Columbia and North Dakota, Alliance said. The new offerings will complement the pipeline’s “bullet line” service from Western Canada to Chicago, as well as provide hub services such as the Natural Gas Exchange and the Alliance Chicago Exchange project.

PG&E Launches Extensive Pipeline Safety, Reliability Effort

Stung by strong customer and community criticism, San Francisco-based Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Tuesday announced a five-part, multi-year effort to greatly strengthen the safety and reliability of its natural gas transmission pipeline system. Called Pipeline 2020, the program will augment initiatives implemented by the combination utility in the wake of the Sept. 9 pipeline explosion and fire that killed seven people in San Bruno, CA.
