Questar Corp.’s long-term strategy will continue to focus on the “three Rs” — returns, risks and the Rocky Mountains, CEO Keith Rattie said last week.

Williams has no intention to delay any of its natural gas exploration and production (E&P) operations in the Rocky Mountains — even with the basis blowouts that have decimated gas prices in the region over the past few months.

In a transforming deal, Newfield Exploration Co. plans to acquire substantially all of Stone Energy Corp.’s natural gas-heavy assets in the Rocky Mountains for $575 million cash. The assets, with proved reserves of 200 Bcfe and probable and possible reserves of more than 150 Bcfe, expand the independent’s reach in the Uinta and Williston basins and give it entry into the Green River, Powder River, Wind River and Northern Denver-Julesburg basins of Wyoming and the Southern Alberta Basin of Montana.

An “enormous amount of gas” in the Rocky Mountains awaits discovery from emerging basins and recovery from legacy assets, which means a lot more money and new pipe will be needed to be poured into the region within the next few years, Questar Corp. CEO Keith Rattie said.
