NRG Becomes First Energy Merchant to File for Bankruptcy Since Enron

The Minneapolis-based merchant power subsidiary of Xcel Energy filed its long anticipated voluntary petition for reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Several affiliates, including NRG Power Marketing and NRG Northeast Generating LLC, also filed for protection, but parent company Xcel was not pulled under.

Minneapolis-based NRG Energy Inc. is buying a 2,255 MW project portfolio from Indeck Energy Services Inc., which includes combined-cycle and peaking power plants serving the Chicago and upstate New York marketplace. The assets include the Rockford I and II Energy Centers, located 75 miles west of Chicago in Rockford, IL; Bourbonnais I and II Energy Centers, 50 miles south of Chicago; and the Ilion Energy Center in central upstate New York. No financial details were disclosed.

Southern Energy Inc., a unit of Southern Co. is selling its 50%interest in Louisiana Generating LLC to NRG Energy Inc. LouisianaGenerating, which will now be held 100% by Minneapolis-based NRG,was recently confirmed by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Gerald H. Schiff asthe winning bidder for bankrupt Cajun Electric Power Cooperative’s1,708 MW of fossil-fueled generation. Louisiana Generating offered$1.026 billion for the Cajun assets.

Calpine’s Buying Binge Engulfs CGCA

Acquisitive Calpine Corp. stuck to its strategy last Friday,saying it agreed to buy 80% of the Minneapolis, MN-basedCogeneration Corp. of America (CGCA) for $145 million. The proposedacquisition will increase Calpine’s gas-fired energy production to2,476 net MW of capacity, representing a 20% jump in production.Calpine expects to complete the deal in January.
