MMS: Ike Destroyed 52 Platforms, Four Rigs

Hurricane Ike destroyed 52 of the 3,800 oil and natural gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), along with three jack-up drilling rigs and one platform drilling rig, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) said late Wednesday. Overall, 1,450 offshore structures were pounded by winds of more than 74 mph during the storm.

Small Gains Reported In GOM Gas Production Restoration

About 61.6% of the usual 7.4 Bcf/d of Gulf of Mexico (GOM) natural gas production remained shut in Tuesday, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) reported. Eleven of the 26 major gas pipelines and seven gas processors in the Gulf Coast area also remained shuttered, but offshore operators were reporting some success in restoring production to pre-hurricane levels.

Three-Quarters of GOM Gas Output Still Shut In

The Minerals Management Service (MMS) Friday reported that 75.4%, or 5.58 Bcf/d, of the 7.4 Bcf/d of natural gas produced in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) remained shut in, based on reports from 67 operators. Damaged gas pipelines, flooded onshore gas processors and power outages continued to slow recovery from Hurricane Ike as well as Hurricane Gustav.

Watchdog Group Calls on Interior to Abolish RIK Program

The watchdog group Project on Government Oversight (POGO) issued a report Wednesday calling on Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to abolish the Minerals Management Services’ (MMS) royalty in-kind (RIK) program following the disclosure last week of drug use and sexual misconduct by employees within the program.

Around 87.5% of the natural gas and 95.2% of the oil produced in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) remained shut in at midday Thursday, according to the Minerals Management Service (MMS). Estimated gas output from the GOM before Hurricane Gustav was 7.4 Bcf/d; oil production was around 1.3 million b/d.
