With so many proposed new pipelines and expansions in the works to serve the wild demand growth in California, Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP and Calpine Corp. wasted no time this week in marketing space on their massive $1.7 billion gas pipeline project, which was announced last week (see Daily GPI, May 3). The companies launched an open season yesterday to take binding market requests for service through June 1 on their 1,030-mile Sonoran Pipeline.

Reliant Resources, the second energy IPO in as many weeks, lit up the New York Stock Exchange with its initial public offering last Wednesday as the most active stock in heavy trading. The Houston-based unit of Reliant Energy opened the day at a stock price of $30 — a price that has increased four times since December–and ended 10% up, closing at $33.02 on its first day.

A majority of those surveyed believe that California’s troubled energy situation will continue to deteriorate in the short-term and that the state’s ongoing woes will prove to be a drag on the national economy, according to Americans for Balanced Energy Choices (ABEC).
