Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline officials began constructionof the 203-mile mainline that will extend from outside theU.S.-Canada border near Baileyville, ME, to Westbrook, ME.Maritimes and its Canadian affiliate will transport gas from theSable Offshore Energy Project off the coast of Nova Scotia tomarkets in Atlantic Canada and the Northeast U.S. Constructionbegins with the clearing and grading of the right-of-way along thedesignated route followed thereafter by ditching and pipeinstallation. Earlier this year, Maritimes successfully completedthe horizontal directional drill crossings of the Androscoggin andSt. Croix Rivers.

Algonquin has completed turbine replacement at the Burrillville(RI) Compressor Station. However, April 30-May 5 work on the30-inch mainline will limit Burrillville throughput to 400,000Dth/d, the pipeline said.

NW Line Break Disruptions Minor

Northwest Pipeline said it was able to keep all but a smallpercentage of markets whole after its 26-inch mainline explodedabout 8:20 p.m. PST Friday in the Columbia River Gorge area nearStevenson, WA, about 32 miles east of Portland (see Daily GPI,March 1). The rupture caused a fireball, but no injuries werereported and pipeline workers had the situation controlled withinan hour, a spokeswoman said.

Indians Force TransCanada to Cancel Ontario Expansion

TransCanada Pipelines Monday canceled part of its C$403 millionsystem expansion project on its Canadian Mainline because of aninability to resolve negotiations with a local tribe of Indians,yet the pipeline company insists other parts of the expansion willcontinue. TransCanada would not disclose the nature of thedisagreement except to say the parties could not resolve aboriginaland treaty rights issues as well as future economic opportunityissues.

Sale of Trunkline Segment Comes Under Fire

A proposal of Trunkline Gas to sell one third of its mainlinegas system – about 720 miles – to an affiliate for transportationof ethane and other hydrocarbons came under heavy attack at FERCfrom the pipeline’s shippers this week.
