Futures, Southern Heat Boost Cash Prices at All Points

Basing its strength largely on Monday’s 14-cent near-month futures gain, and to a lesser degree on the South adding some air conditioning load to that already existing in the scorching desert Southwest, the cash market recorded double-digit increases across the board Tuesday. Opinions were divided on whether the rally could be sustained Wednesday.

Despite Asset Sales and Hurricanes, Prices Lift Devon’s Earnings 44%

Property sales and to a lesser degree, the recent hurricanes, sent Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Inc.’s combined oil and natural gas production down from a year ago, but even with the divested assets, high commodity prices lifted net earnings 44%, to $744 million ($1.63/share), compared with $517 million ($1.03) in 3Q2004.

A great deal of cooling load across the southern tier of states combined with a moderate amount of heating load in the Northeast and (to a lesser degree) Midwest to produce rising prices at nearly all points Tuesday. Northern California Escapes Overall Price Plunge

Until a major sell-off came Friday, it appeared that priceswould realize fairly substantial week-to-week increases, thankslargely to double-digit gains that started the week off lastMonday. But Friday declines that constituted almost a mirror-imagereversal of Monday’s upticks left most points flat to just a fewcents above week-earlier levels. Northern California (Malin andPG&E citygate) showed the most strength, rising almost a dimeabove the previous Friday.
