Nicor Gas, Illinois Officials Settle Mercury Lawsuits for $4.1 Million

Northern Illinois Gas Co. (Nicor Gas) has agreed to pay nearly $4.1 million for its role in mercury leaks and improper disposal over a 10-year period of some of its gas regulators that were replaced by the utility in its service area. The agreement, approved by Cook County Circuit Court Judge Paul P. Biebel, was reached on Wednesday between Nicor Gas and the Illinois attorney general and the state’s attorneys of Cook, DuPage and Will counties.

Exxon Mobil Corp. said it will take “all legal steps” tochallenge a record $3.5 billion verdict announced last week by anAlabama jury, which found the oil company had defrauded the stateand underpaid royalties on natural gas well leases in state waters.The case centered on charges that the energy giant had underpaid upto $87.7 million in royalties on the Mobile Bay natural gas projectin the Gulf of Mexico.

Ohio Bill Would Bolster Columbia’s Defense

A day after a Delaware Judge dismissed one of three NiSourcelawsuits against Columbia Energy Group, NiSource suffered yetanother setback in its battle for a hostile takeover of Columbia.Ohio State Representative David Goodman (R-Bexley), who already haspublicly opposed the merger, has introduced legislation designed toclose a loophole in Ohio law that would allow hostile takeovers ofgas utilities to take place without public review and scrutiny.Goodman was joined as sponsor of the legislation by 77 of the 99members of the Ohio House of Representatives.
