A combination of underlying factors, some of them unexpected and not widely known, probably will lead to another record for average annual natural gas prices this year, speakers at GasMart in New Orleans said on Thursday. Some of the causes are clear, including lower production and record high crude oil prices, while others are not as clear, such as the weak dollar and rising industrial output despite high fuel costs.

Calgary-based independent Esprit Exploration Ltd. has completed its reorganization into two entities: Esprit Energy Trust and ProspEx Resources Ltd. Esprit, known until last year as Canadian 88 Energy Corp., held a special shareholder meeting at the end of September to vote on reorganizing into an income trust and an exploration and production company. Under the reorganization, the energy trust will hold 90% of Esprit’s existing proved producing reserves, and gain Canadian tax advantages. ProspEx will own the balance of the assets and some of the undeveloped lands and will operate as an exploration and production company.

Husky Extends CBM Exploration Joint Venture with Trident

Calgary-based Husky Energy Inc., one of Canada’s largest integrated producers, better known for a portfolio of heavy oil prospects, last week announced a two-year extension of a farm-out and joint venture agreement with privately held Trident Exploration Corp. to develop natural gas from coal (NGC) and coalbed methane (CBM) in central Alberta. The agreement calls for another 120 wells to be drilled over the next two years in the Fenn Rumsey area.

Homeland Security Confirms Illegal Aliens, Drugs and Possible Terrorist Ties to LNG Tankers

The federal government has known for several years that illegal aliens smuggling drugs have stowed away on Algerian-flagged liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers entering Boston Harbor, and had “some suspicion of possible associations” between the stowaways arriving in Boston and the terrorists indicted for their role in the so-called “Millennium Plot” to blow up Los Angeles International Airport and other U.S. sites, an official with the Department of Homeland Security said.
