Enron and Peoples Energy put their Chicago market muscletogether last week in a wholesale services partnership and energyasset optimization package that likely will impact the Midwestmarket for years to come. Joseph W. Sutton has been promoted to vice chairman of Enron.Sutton will join Enron’s office of the chairman, which includesChairman and CEO Kenneth L. Lay and President and COO Jeffrey K.Skilling. Southern Union gained permission last week to join an existinglawsuit against Southwest Gas in a last-ditch attempt to overtakeOneok as the winner in the race to merge with Southwest. Thelawsuit accuses Southwest Gas’ board of directors of refusing tonegotiate with Southern Union in good faith. Despite the SouthernUnion lawsuit filing, Southwest reaffirmed its acceptance of theOneok offer.

Avista Corp. affiliate Avista Power and STEAG AG, Germany’slargest independent power producer agreed to form a joint ventureto develop, build and/or buy electric generation assets throughoutNorth America. Initial regions of interest include the Northwest,the Southwest and the Southeast. Projects of interest include thosepowered by natural gas, coal and hydro.
