The Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) said Wednesday that 329,000 MMBtu of royalty-in-kind (RIK) gas produced from federal leases in the Gulf of Mexico was sold to eight companies during a March sale.

For the first time, the Department of Interior’s U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and an international research team have proven that it is technically feasible to produce natural gas from gas hydrates, the naturally occurring “ice like” combination of natural gas and water that may be more abundant than conventional gas supplies — especially in Arctic regions like the Mackenzie Delta.

The Interior Departments’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) has ordered several oil and natural gas producers to pay about $2 million in additional royalties to American Indian tribes and individual Indian mineral owners for production on their lands in 2001.

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) published in the Federal Register its final notice for Eastern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Sale 189. The lease sale, which will be held at 9 a.m. CST on Dec. 10, in New Orleans, encompasses 256 blocks in the Eastern GOM Planning Area and covers 1.47 million acres. Available unleased blocks in the planning area number 138 and cover 794,880 acres.

The Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said that 91 parcels of federal land generated a total revenue of $464,222 through a competitive auction of oil and gas leases conducted on Sept. 25 in Springfield, VA.
