The American Petroleum Institute (API) is urging the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to reject proposals to ban horizontal drilling in the 1.1-million-acre George Washington National Forest (GWNF) in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. API said a ban would amount to “an arbitrary and unprecedented shift in national energy policy through the forest management planning process.”

Oil well drilling significantly outpaced natural gas activity in the third quarter, the American Petroleum Institute (API) reported Wednesday. For every two oil wells that were completed during the period, only one gas well was completed.

Industry Brief

The American Gas Association, the American Petroleum Institute, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America and the Association of Oil Pipe Lines, together with the Canadian Gas Association and the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, have initiated a study to explore safety models and procedures in other sectors for use in the delivery of natural gas and pipeline-transported liquids. The study will complement the investigative initiative of the National Transportation Safety Board and the Department of Transportation’s regulatory initiatives, which currently are under way. The study is expected to be completed as early as February.

Thousands of Marcellus Jobs Possible in New York, Pennsylvania

Calling development of the Marcellus Shale play “a great opportunity” for New York, the Public Policy Institute of New York State Inc. (PPI) said a scenario where 500 gas wells were drilled every year in the state would create 62,620 jobs, $2.7 billion in added value and $1 billion in local, state and federal tax revenue.
