U.S. natural gas working inventories hit a record high in November of 3.923 Tcf, but domestic inventories ended January at an estimated 2.7 Tcf, or 0.2 Tcf below January 2012 levels, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The lower storage numbers were blamed in part on wellhead freeze-offs in several onshore basins.

For the fourth year in a row, investor groups are calling on leading U.S. natural gas producers to disclose information about how they manage and measure the risks associated with unconventional drilling operations. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has finalized revisions to general permits for natural gas-fired engines and equipment at compressor stations, which are “75-90%” stricter than current limits for the largest, most common types of engines used at compressor stations. DEP also is suggesting revisions to one section of the air quality permit exemption list governing well drilling sites.

Natural gas production in the Lower 48 states climbed 0.6%, or 0.41 Bcf/d, in November from October levels, according to the latest figures from the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Lower 48 production was 73.88 Bcf/d, a new record for the data, which EIA began reporting in January 2005.

The Marcellus Shale, among other regions, could see persistent ethane rejection until the market comes back into balance, according to analysts at Raymond James & Associates Inc.

In its first forecast for 2014, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said it expects natural gas prices to “gradually rise but still remain relatively low” over the next 24 months, with Henry Hub prices averaging $3.74/MMBtu this year and $3.90/MMBtu in 2014, compared with $2.75/MMBtu in 2012.
