Rapid City, SD-based Black Hills Corp. has named John Benton vice president and general manager of the energy holding company’s oil and gas production unit, Black Hills Exploration & Production. Benton is replacing John Vering, a Black Hills board member who has served as interim CEO of the E&P unit and will return to his board position. With bachelor’s and master’s degrees in petroleum engineering from Colorado School of Mines, Benton comes to Black Hills from Rex Energy Corp., where he headed development of the company’s Niobrara acreage in Wyoming and Colorado.

After reviewing orders from bankrupt securities firm MF Global Holdings Ltd., CME Clearing, a trading arm of CME Group, said it was holding “substantial excess margin collateral” and continued to be in a “strong financial position” with respect to MF Global and in general.

Gulfmark Energy Group Inc. of San Antonio, TX, said it has obtained financing from Notre-Dame Capital Inc. of Montreal to support development of its Eagle Ford Shale assets. The company said it intends to drill through the Escondido, Olmos, San Miguel, Austin Chalk and Eagle Ford formations. “We have yet to assess all of the undeveloped potential opportunities to expand our operations utilizing horizontal wells with multi-stage fracturing technologies,” said CEO Michael Ward. “Multiple targets have been identified; however, several other opportunities are currently under evaluation and analysis. This financing will allow us to explore all resources available in our current asset base.” Gulfmark operations are currently focused on western South Texas. Terms of the financing were not disclosed.

DCP Midstream is holding a binding open season through Oct. 31 for capacity on its proposed Southern Hills Pipeline. The company said it is moving toward a fourth quarter close on its acquisition of Seaway Products Pipeline Co., whose assets would be part of the Southern Hills natural gas liquids (NGL) project.

Crosstex NGL Pipeline LP is holding a binding open season through Oct. 14 for capacity on a new natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline system (the Crosstex NGL Pipeline) to transport unfractionated NGLs produced in the Permian Basin, Midcontinent, Barnett Shale, Eagle Ford Shale and Rocky Mountain areas from the Mont Belvieu, TX, area to NGL fractionation facilities in Eunice and Riverside, LA. Crosstex Energy LP and Crosstex Energy Inc. plan to construct the common carrier pipeline with a preliminary design capacity of at least 70,000 b/d to Eunice, with a lesser amount of capacity available to Riverside (see Shale Daily, July 27).
