Northeast, California Dips Stand Out Amid Overall Flatness

While nearly all the production-area points held steady withchanges of no more than a penny or two in both directions, it wasdelivered prices in the Northeast, Midwest and California that gavethe cash market a taste of volatility Thursday. Northeast citygatesrepeated as the day’s big losers with declines from about 35-38cents (Transco Zone 6-NYC and Texas Eastern M-3) to more than 50cents (Iroquois Zone 2 and Algonquin citygate) as the regionexperiences a very slow warming trend from its early-week chill.Ranges were very large as prices fell steadily while tradingproceeded, one source said.

Indiana Energy, Inc. said yesterday that a special meeting ofcommon shareholders would be held on December 17 at its corporateheadquarters in Indianapolis, IN, to consider the previously announcedmerger with SIGCORP Inc. The merger would create a new $1.9 billionholding company called Vectren (see Daily GPI, June 15). Through its utility subsidiaries,Vectren will offer gas and electricity to more than 650,000 customersin adjoining service areas that cover nearly two-thirds ofIndiana. Vectren’s non-regulated subsidiaries will offerenergy-related products and services, including: energy marketing;performance contracting and coal mining; fiber-optic basedtelecommunications services; locating, trenching and meter readingservices; and materials management to customers throughout thesurrounding region. Under the merger agreement, Indiana Energyshareholders will receive one share of Vectren’s common stock for eachshare of Indiana Energy stock. SIGCORP shareholders will receive 1.333shares of Vectren’s common stock for each share of SIGCORP stock.

Futures Flat Ahead of AGA, NWS Data

After a two-day, 20-cent price drop to begin the week, thefutures market held its ground Wednesday as traders waited on thesidelines in anticipation of fresh supply and demand news releasedyesterday evening. By virtue of its 0.5-cent advance and higherhigh and lower low, yesterday’s session completed a bullish outsideup day on the daily charts. But despite the positive movement, thespot contract was unable to fill in a key chart gap up to $2.52.

El Paso said Friday the White Rock (NM) Station had been takenout of service for emergency maintenance. The pipeline heldcapacity out of San Juan Basin at the Cycle 2 scheduled rate of2,685 MMcf/d Friday but lowered the volume slightly to 2,680 MMcf/dfor Saturday’s gas day.

Gas-Directed Drilling Continues To Hold 80% of the Total

The industry’s hunt for natural gas has gone way beyond thesearch for oil and shows no signs of letting up. Gas directeddrilling has held a solid 80% of all U.S. drilling by rotary rigssince mid-July. And last week the number of rotary rigs drillingfor gas leaped to 609 from 579 the week prior, while total rigsrose to 750 from 721, the largest weekly gain since Nov. 28, 1997,according to Baker Hughes. Oil-directed drilling declined duringthe week by one rig to 139.
