Retail Gas Choice a Hard Sell in Colorado

There are still no takers in a plan to unbundle Colorado’s gas utilities, but at least two utilities may be warming to the idea. A meeting in mid-July of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to discuss natural gas local distribution company unbundling, gas utility plans and consumer issues concluded with only two companies — the largest ones serving the state — reporting that they might provide unbundling programs. Just not now.

Southwestern Hit Hard By $109M Royalty Ruling

Southwestern Energy has revealed that it will be forced to selloff some unidentified assets to cover the costs associated with aruling last week by the Arkansas Supreme Court. The court affirmeda 1998 decision of a Sebastian County Circuit Court awarding morethan $109 million in a class action to royalty owners of SEECO,Inc., a wholly-owned Southwestern Energy subsidiary.

With the winter heating season totaling 14% warmer than normalso far, gas utilities will be hard pressed to prevent seriousearnings declines. As a result, Nicor ran out and bought a weatherinsurance policy for fiscal year 2000 that is designed to provideprotection from the financial impact of unusually warm weather.

Deregulation Still Hitting AGL Hard

The effects of deregulation are still being felt by AGLResources, the parent of the now-totally unbundled Atlanta GasLight, as 151 employees, or 7% of the workforce, has been cut sinceAugust, the company said recently. No more layoffs are expected,although the company did say it is always looking for ways toimprove efficiency.
