Analyst Says Lag in Data Hinders True Picture of Offshore Production

U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GOM) production data from the Minerals Management Service lags Texas and Louisiana’s state data by 15 months, but even though it appears that offshore natural gas production is on the upswing, it’s still too early to say, according to a new report by Stephen Smith Energy Associates.

Sempra’s Cameron (Hackberry) LNG Terminal Receives Environmental Go-Ahead

Sempra Energy’s Cameron (previously Hackberry) LNG terminal on the Gulf Coast received its final approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Thursday for the construction of a 1.5 Bcf/d LNG receiving terminal on the site of an old petroleum gas facility on the Calcasieu Ship Channel in Louisiana.

GOM June Rig Dayrate Climbs 7% from May, Up 5% from ’02

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) saw its offshore drilling rig dayrate climb 7.2% from May to June and 5.1% over last year, according to the latest Summary of Current Offshore Rig Economics, or SCORE, for June 2003. SCORE, compiled by oil and gas drilling contractor GlobalSantaFe Corp., reported that worldwide, SCORE was up 3.0% from the previous month.

Transportation Notes

Citing “the forecast potential for Tropical Storm Claudette to enter the Gulf of Mexico this weekend,” Texas Eastern said Wednesday the previously posted shutdown of its Main Pass System’s Line 40-B (see Daily GPI, July 9) has been postponed until July 16; it previously had been set to begin this Sunday. The duration and course of Claudette will dictate whether the schedule gets shifted again, the pipeline said.

Cheniere Hires Finance Advisers to Aid in Gulf Coast LNG Project Funding

Cheniere Energy Inc. last Tuesday said it hired HSBC Securities (USA) Inc. and Petrie Parkman & Co. to assist the company in arranging project funding for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification facilities that it plans to build in Corpus Christi, TX, and Sabine Pass, LA.

Houston Exploration Hits Gas in Three GOM Discoveries

The Houston Exploration Co. on Thursday announced three natural gas discoveries in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The wells, which together are expected to produce about 35 MMcf/d, will begin ramping up this year, with the first well set to begin production in August.

Houston-based independent Spinnaker Exploration Co. on Wednesday announced four new discoveries of natural gas and oil on the shelf of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) in just one month’s time. Currently, Spinnaker has 12 ongoing rig operations in the GOM, including eight successful wells with its partners in the Front Runner project.

Screen Helps May Aftermarket Get Strong Start

Bolstered primarily by fresh screen strength and also by hot weather in the Gulf Coast states and much of the West, the initial May aftermarket was launched Friday with across-the-board advances over end-of-May numbers. A few points were confined to single-digit gains, but the overall market’s upticks ranged from about a dime to 30 cents.
