Prices Soar on Stronger Fundamentals, Screen

The swing market had a lot going for it Monday, and it showed in sharply higher prices at all points. The biggest factor, of course, was more summer-like hot weather returning in several market areas, particularly through the midsection of the United States. In addition, a tropical wave in the Caribbean drew some attention, the screen went up nearly 16 cents, and there was the normal rebound in industrial/commercial load following a weekend.

ICE Releases Six-Month Trading Volumes

In only six months since going live with its full spectrum of over-the-counter (OTC) products, Online trading platform IntercontinentalExchange (ICE), has made a significant impact on the energy and metals markets. The company said over 42,000 trades have been made on ICE since it commenced trading with a combined notional value of $70 billion. Trading volumes on ICE have been growing exponentially with average daily volume in March up 33% from February.

Rain, Courts Favor on California Power

With water tables rising and court rulings going the state’sway, California began the week Monday on a more upbeat note thanany time this year. A federal court ruling late Friday assuredemergency real-time supplies will be available to the statetransmission grid operator, Cal-ISO, at least through March 19,prompting the governor while on a political trip to Washington,D.C., to issue a reaction praising the federal judge for his “wiseand thoughtful decision.”
