After recording a high of $6.610 on Monday, August natural gas futures swooped lower, giving notice that the bear move of the last few weeks might have a little more fuel left in the tanks. The prompt month notched a low of $6.390 before going on to settle at $6.410, down 3.4 cents from Friday’s close.

Merrill Invests $150M in Privately Held E&P

A subsidiary group of Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. has invested $150 million into privately held Leor Exploration & Production LLC, giving it an undisclosed stake in the Houston-based producer. Leor is targeting natural gas in the Deep Bossier trend of Texas and Louisiana.

New AZ Commission Mix Takes Effect Tuesday

A returning and a new member of the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) will be sworn into their respective offices Tuesday, giving the state regulatory commission a permanent replacement for Marc Spitzer, a former member and state legislative leader who accepted a nomination to FERC earlier this year. The ACC will begin the new year with a full complement of regulators.

Barclays Buys 40% Stake in NGP Energy Capital Fund

Barclays Capital, the investment banking division of Barclays plc, said it bought a 40% stake in private equity firm NGP Energy Capital, giving Barclays a bigger stake in the North American energy capital management business. The deal follows Barclays Capital’s assumption of Duke Energy North America’s natural gas and power derivative contracts last November (see NGI, Nov. 21, 2005).
