Entergy-Koch Opens for Business

Entergy-Koch LP opened for business yesterday, adding a newwholesale energy trading, transportation and marketing company tothe burgeoning marketplace. Formed by subsidiaries of Entergy Corp.and Koch Industries, Houston-based EKLP will deliver, market andtrade power, natural gas and other energy-related commodities,including weather derivatives through Axia Energy LP, Axia EnergyEurope Ltd. and Gulf South Pipeline Co. LP.

NRG, Dynegy Gamble On Sierra Pacific Units

In the sixth asset alliance since their 50-50 venture was formed in 1997, NRG Energy Inc. and Dynegy Inc. expanded their generation portfolio in the western United States last week with the purchase of one power plant and buying most of the generating capacity of another plant from Nevada Power Co. for $634 million. Minneapolis-based NRG will be operator and Houston-based Dynegy will serve as power marketer and fuel supplier.

GRI and IGT Form GTI

GRI and the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) named theirrecently merged organizations the Gas Technology Institute (GTI)last week and formed a senior management team led by John F.Riordan, president and CEO. The research groups announced theirmerger in April, saying it was mainly an effort to reduceoverlapping dues paid by their members and to combine the variousstrengths of the two entities.

A consortium of 21 energy and utility companies have formed anew company, Pantellos Corp., to operate an e-procurement web site,which was announced earlier this year. The companies also havehired Commerce One, a world leader in e-commerce site development,as their primary technology partner. Pantellos will have an initialcapitalization of $100 million.

A new “dream team” of companies formed last week appears to havemore than enough market muscle and expertise to succeed whereothers have failed in the retail energy market. Enron Corp., IBMand America Online have launched an ambitious plan to build a majornational retail energy company with IBM as back office manager,Enron as energy supplier, and AOL as the key link to the smallcustomer marketplace.
