Industrial Sector Woes Dragged U.S. Energy Use Down 2.3% in 2008

Total U.S. energy use in 2008 was an estimated 99.2 quadrillion Btu, down 2.3% from 101.5 quadrillion Btu in 2007, according to energy flow charts released Monday by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

Sempra LNG Facility to Receive Russian Gas for California Markets

More gas could ultimately flow sooner through Sempra Energy’s underutilized West Coast liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal following an announcement last Wednesday that Royal Dutch Shell and Russia’s Gazprom have signed a series of 20-year agreements in which both will be buying LNG supplies from the eastern Russia Sakhalin II production area. It gives the Russian behemoth its first major entry into the U.S. gas market.

Baja LNG Not Big Factor in California Market, NorthernStar Exec Says

New supplies soon to flow through Sempra Energy’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Mexico will not be a major factor longer term in the California energy market, said a NorthernStar Natural Gas executive overseeing the company’s proposed Clearwater Port LNG project off the coast of Oxnard, CA.
