Bearish Sentiment Still Rules at Most Points

With at least a couple of traders starting to express boredom over a stagnant market, moderate softness remained in command at most points Tuesday. Just as they have almost every day so far in the new year, some prices swam against the general tide: several instances of flat to up to more than a quarter higher numbers were seen in the Gulf Coast, Midcontinent/Midwest and West.

Any skepticism over a “Siberian Express” arctic cold front making a stop in the Lower 48 was quickly wiped away last week as temperatures plummeted into the teens, 20s and low 30s across much of the Northeast, Midwest and Midcontinent. Pioneer Natural Resources Co. said production delays on the start-up of its Canyon Express project dropped predicted fourth quarter production results, which now are expected to average 117 Mboe/d. Year-ago fourth-quarter production averaged 110 Mboe/d. The Dallas-based independent said operational issues had delayed production from one of its six wells in the project, but net production is currently reaching expected levels, averaging more than 100 MMcf/d with five of six wells producing. The sixth well is expected to begin production in the first quarter. Fourth quarter realized prices for natural gas liquids are expected to range between $16-$16.20/bbl, while oil prices should range between $22.90-$23.10/bbl. Pioneer’s fourth quarter realized price for gas, including the effects of hedges, is expected to average approximately $2.65-$2.85/Mcf. Total exploration and abandonment expense is expected to be approximately $27 million after taxes, including charges related to an unsuccessful well on its Lightning prospect, the first of three prospects Pioneer is drilling near its Falcon field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.

Panhandle Eastern plans a maintenance outage of the 100 Line from Louisburg to Houstonia for Thursday and Friday. The Pony Express point will be unavailable for 36 hours, affecting about 75 MMcf.

Producers Consider Non-Stop Route from Prudhoe Bay to Chicago

A direct, express pipeline stretching all the way to Chicago from Prudhoe Bay is among the options being considered for tapping Arctic natural gas by the three principal production companies operating in Alaska. The mammoth possibility was disclosed in the Canadian gas capital of Calgary, to a conference of the Canadian Energy Research Institute, by the North American Natural Gas Pipeline Group.

Transportation Notes

The schedule for an outage of KN Energy’s Pony Express Line, whichbegan Tuesday (see Daily GPI, April 26),has been revised to last through May 27, according to the Williamsbulletin board. Williams is not allowing nominations at the KN-Glavininterconnect (Franklin County, KS) during the outage.
