Alliance New Services to Target Shale Plays

With shipper contracts expiring in 2015, Alliance Pipeline Ltd. plans to develop receipt and short-haul services that take advantage of the pipeline’s location near developing gas shale plays in British Columbia and North Dakota, Alliance said. The new offerings will complement the pipeline’s “bullet line” service from Western Canada to Chicago, as well as provide hub services such as the Natural Gas Exchange and the Alliance Chicago Exchange project.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has approved Empire Pipeline Inc.’s request to use its existing import facilities at the U.S.-Canadian border to export natural gas to Canada, noting that both countries are signatories to the North American Free Trade Agreement [CP10-136]. The 233-mile, 24-inch diameter pipeline said it has begun receiving requests for firm transportation service from primary receipt points in the U.S. to a delivery point at its interconnection with TransCanada Pipelines Ltd. at the U.S.-Canada border. Empire, a wholly owned subsidiary of National Fuel Gas Co., said expanding production from the Marcellus Shale is driving gas to new markets (see NGI, Sept. 13).

Oilsands to Crimp Canadian Exports 1.5 Bcf/d by 2015, Says Ziff

The amount of Canadian gas available for export to the United States will decline by about 4 Bcf/d over the next nine years, from 9.7 Bcf/d in 2006 to about 5.7 Bcf/d in 2015, according to Calgary-based Ziff Energy Group. And to a great extent gas consumption by Alberta oilsands producers can be blamed.
