Futures Drop 10.5 Cents, But Cold Air Burst Looms

With strength in Sunday’s overnight Access trade session prompted by forecasts for midweek cold, natural gas futures observers were expecting more of the same on Monday. However, after the December contract notched a high of $11.90 in morning trade, it plummeted just before 11 a.m. EST to carve out an $11.37 low before settling at $11.607, down 10.5 cents on the day.

Natural Gas Storage Injection, Petroleum Weakness Jostles Bears from Hibernation

Surprising most of the industry, which was expecting at least one more withdrawal, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported Thursday morning that 10 Bcf was injected into underground natural gas storage for the week ended April 1. After an eventful day that saw two distinct plunges lower, May natural gas futures settled at $7.366, down 19.2 cents from Wednesday.

Expecting it to be the complete opposite of current weather conditions, WSI Corp. said last week that the February-April period should bring cooler-than-normal temperatures generally south and east of a line from Phoenix to Dallas to Raleigh, NC, with warmer-than-normal temperatures to be the rule elsewhere, especially in the northern tier of states.

While coming in at more than what most of the industry was expecting, the 88 Bcf natural gas storage withdrawal for the week ended Dec. 3 still paled in comparison to the five-year average draw of 101 Bcf and last year’s 111 Bcf pull. However, the market seemed to put a lot more weight into what was expected, rather than into historical comparisons.
