Regulatory approval by the government in Western Australia will allow Chevron Australia Pty Ltd. to move forward with a $1.6 billion expansion of its Australian LNG facilities, the North West Shelf Venture (NWSV) near Karratha, Western Australia. The expansion, which is designed mainly to increase exports to Japan and Pacific Rim countries, also would provide increased LNG shipments to the United States — including a potential new import terminal on the West Coast (see Daily GPI, March 26; March 20).

In its bid to grow its pipeline network in the central UnitedStates and along the Gulf Coast, Enbridge Inc., Canada’s secondlargest pipeline operator, agreed to buy up-and-comer MidcoastEnergy Resources Inc. of Houston, which last year more than doubledits revenue and saw profits soar 51%. Enbridge owns 21.4% of the $3billion Alliance pipeline, which delivers gas from Alberta to theMidwest.

PanCanadian Petroleum encountered a huge amount of gas with itsthird Deep Panuke appraisal well, M-79A, drilled offshore NovaScotia. During a five-day test, the well flowed at an average rateof more than 63 MMcf/d despite limitations in the downholeconfiguration of the test string.
