The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may require independent auditors to examine energy companies’ proved oil and natural gas reserves in the wake of the major reserve write-downs by Royal Dutch/Shell Group and El Paso Corp. this year, according to an SEC memorandum that was sent to Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) last month.

Prosecutors wading through the burgeoning and expensive Enron Corp. case may consider charges in the next month related to Whitewing and Yosemite, two of the company’s partnerships that helped the former energy merchant create cash flow and hide assets.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will hold an additional technical conference on “Energy Price Discovery and Indices” on Tuesday June 24 to explore “some of the less familiar options such as Self-Regulating Organizations (SROs) and audited data hubs.” The announcement issued late Thursday (AD03-7-001) said representatives of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners will participate.
