Burlington Posts Record Quarterly Earnings on High Commodity Prices

Burlington Resources Inc. said Thursday that “higher commodity prices” helped the company report record estimated quarterly earnings of $471 million, or $1.21 per diluted share, during the first quarter of 2005, a 33% increase over the $354 million, or $0.89 per diluted share on a post-stock-split basis, earned during the first quarter of 2004.

Laclede Gas Rates to Drop 11%

To reflect the lower estimated cost of natural gas for the remaining winter heating season, gas rates were immediately lowered about 11% for Laclede Gas Co.’s 631,000 customers, the customers, according to a filing reviewed and accepted by the Missouri Public Service Commission (PSC). Residential customers currently pay $0.83/therm, and the new rate will decrease to $0.71/therm.

Idaho PUC Denies Avista Request to Reconsider Gas Deal Disallowance

Although they allowed some mathematical corrections sought by the utility, the Idaho Public Utilities Commission last Wednesday denied a request for reconsideration by Avista Utilities’ for its full cost recovery of a natural gas supply deal and cost overruns at the utility’s Boulder Park generation project in Spokane, WA. The computational corrections will have no immediate impact on Avista’s utility rates in Idaho, the PUC said.
