EnCana to Follow ‘More Measured, Cautious’ Long-Term Growth

Calgary-based EnCana Corp. has cut in half its long-term annual growth target to 5% from 10% through 2007 to free up cash and enable more share buybacks, CEO Randy Eresman said Monday. Eresman also acknowledged EnCana had been poised to spin off C$20 billion of its mature natural gas assets into an energy income trust until the Canadian government last week decided to make the trusts begin paying corporate taxes (see Daily GPI, Nov. 3).

Maritimes Files Expansion to Support Canaport LNG; Emera to Own $350M Lateral

Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline filed an application with FERC for a 418,000 Dth/d pipeline expansion to support gas from the Canaport liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal, which is being built by Irving Oil and Repsol in Saint John, NB. The pipeline expansion would include the addition of five compressor stations in Maine, 1.7 miles of 30-inch diameter pipeline and modifications to other existing U.S. facilities.

DENA Losses Cloud an Otherwise Sunny Quarter for Duke

Duke Energy’s $1.2 billion sale of Australian energy assets in March enable the company to post a 48% increase in first quarter net income to $334 million, or 36 cents/share, but excluding one-time charges, earnings fell to 32 cents/share from 42 cents/share in 1Q2003, and missed Wall Street estimates of 37 cents/share. Duke shares were down 4% Thursday to $20.98.

Asset Sales Enable Magnum Hunter to Redeem Notes Due in ’07

Focused on efforts to continue its debt load reduction, independent Magnum Hunter Resources Inc. on Thursday said that next month it plans to redeem $30 million of its outstanding 10% senior notes that won’t come due until 2007.

Reliant Unveils Natural Gas Index, Risk Management Tools

Reliant Energy Wholesale Group unveiled a new natural gas index and associated financial risk management instrument, designed to enable natural gas traders to better hedge risk for their companies and portfolio clients during the heating season. The Weather-Sensitive Gas Load Index (WGLI) measures current and forecasted residential and commercial natural gas consumption. To work with the index, Reliant has developed a financial instrument tailored for gas traders, called the WGLI Swap.
