Northwest Attributes Recent Line Rupture to Stress-Corrosion Cracking

Northwest Pipeline said longitudinal stress-corrosion cracking caused a pipeline rupture on its 26-inch diameter line near Lake Tapps, WA, on May 1. A report by a metallurgical firm from Texas determined the cause. It is the first time that stress-corrosion cracking, the Canadian pipeline industry’s nemesis, has caused a failure on the Northwest system, the company said. Landslides are usually the cause of pipeline ruptures on Northwest.

Tidelands Oil & Gas Acquires 225-Mile TX Gas Pipeline

Tidelands Oil & Gas Corp. has completed the acquisition of 225 miles of large diameter Texas natural gas pipeline from ZG Gathering Ltd. Terms of the transaction including acquisition price were not disclosed. The pipeline travels through the Dimmit, Frio, Uvalde and Zavala counties of Texas. Tidelands said it plans to interconnect this new system to its existing systems, which will deliver natural gas to Tidelands proposed international pipeline crossing at Piedras Negras, Mexico.

Construction of Kern River High Desert Lateral Completed

Kern River Pipeline’s $29 million, 32-mile, 24-inch-diameter High Desert Pipeline lateral officially was completed last Tuesday almost a year before its major customer, an 810 MW electric generating plant, is due to come on line (July 2003). In the meantime, Kern River is accepting nominations for capacity on the 282 MMcf/d pipeline.

Columbia Loop Line Ruptures in WV, Cuts Service to Allegheny Customers

Columbia Gas Transmission, a unit of NiSource Inc., said a 30-inch diameter looping line carrying about 60 MMcf/d of gas in West Virginia ruptured Monday at 11 p.m., causing a fire but no injuries.

Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America (NGPL) announced plansto build a new 47-mile, 24-inch diameter pipeline lateral into St.Louis to serve Illinois Power’s gas distribution system. The $35million project, which is anchored by a contract with IllinoisPower affiliate Dynegy Marketing and Trade, will add at least300,000 Dth/d of gas transportation capacity to the St. Louismarket.

Bighorn Completes 56-mile Gas Gathering Extension

Bighorn Gas Gathering LLC reported last week that it completed and put in-service a 56-mile, 20-inch diameter line extension on its gas gathering system in Sheridan County, WY, on Nov. 1. (see NGI, June 26).
