Technical Support Holds as Storm Brews; November Slides 5 Cents

November natural gas futures continued to retreat as traders noted that much of the direction of the market was determined as much by spread trading as the trading of outright positions. At the close November futures fell 5.0 cents to $3.601 and December shed 3.6 cents to $4.010. November crude oil skidded 45 cents to $82.21/bbl.

Prices Fall at All Points as Storm Fears, Temperatures Decline

Prices declined by major amounts Tuesday as Tropical Storm Alex refused to become a hurricane and appeared determined to make landfall in northeastern Mexico, well clear of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) production area. Also, heat levels, while still fairly warm in the southern U.S., had receded to some extent since last week.

Transportation Notes

ANR reported that based upon review of its operations and an increase in hydrocarbon dew point (HDP) levels experienced from processing plant operations, it has determined that hydrocarbon liquid fallout is anticipated absent an HDP posting. Thus, effective Friday ANR is establishing an HDP limit of 25 degrees F for receipts between the Defiance and Eunice monitoring points in South Louisiana. This limit, which will not apply to receipt meters flowing 500 Dth/d or less, will remain in effect through Dec. 31, ANR said. See the bulletin board for further details.

Annual Hurricane Impact on GOM Production Actually ‘Modest,’ Says Report

An analysis of Gulf of Mexico (GOM) oil and natural gas production data spanning 45 years determined that the average annual impact from hurricanes is “relatively modest,” and the impact on supply is “typically short-lived,” according to energy consultant IHS.

Energy Transfer Denies Market Manipulation Charge, Seeks Subpoena

Energy Transfer Partners LP (ETP), in a much-anticipated response to a FERC show cause order, said last Tuesday the agency’s “theory of the case” that caused it to charge the company with manipulation of natural gas prices was completely wrong, and it called for an immediate dismissal of the charges. The Dallas-based energy company also sought a subpoena to compel Platts, publisher of Inside FERC’s Gas Market Report and Gas Daily, to turn over evidence in the enforcement case.
