Millennium’s Hudson River Crossing Passes Environmental Review

The proposed 700 MMcf/d Millennium Pipeline project from Ontario to New York City crossed a key environmental hurdle last week when the National Marine Fisheries Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a favorable biological opinion. The Fisheries Service said the project’s Hudson River crossing would have only minimal impact on the endangered shortnose sturgeon.

Market Gives Thumbs-Up to CA Sonoran Pipeline

The proposed Sonoran Pipeline project crossed its first hurdle late last week as potential shippers expressed interest in a significant level of capacity on the proposed 1,030-mile gas pipeline. However, the market seemed to make those hurdles a bit taller as gas prices closed in on $2 in the Rockies and plummeted to nearly $5 at the border.

Fingers Crossed, Alliance, Vector Shoot for Dec. 1

Alliance Pipeline informed its shippers last week that all debris has been cleared from the pipe, all connections are up and running, and that commercial service will begin on Dec. 1. Commercial service originally was expected to begin on Oct. 1 but was delayed several times because of commissioning problems (see NGI, Nov. 13).

The Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline project last week crossedanother major milestone on its way toward bringing gas toNortheastern markets from Atlantic Canada for the first time inNovember 1999. FERC issued a final environmental impact statementon the 200-mile U.S. upstream portion of the system, concluding itwould have limited adverse environmental impact with therecommended mitigation.

PNGTS, Maritimes Begin Laying Pipe

Portland Natural Gas Transmission System (PNGTS) and Maritimes& Northeast Pipeline, L.L.C. (Maritimes) successfully crossedthe first major engineering hurdle in constructing their jointpipeline facilities, which represent the southernmost portion ofeach company’s pipeline system. The joint facilities eventuallywill bring more than 600 MMcf/d of Canadian gas to New Englandmarkets.
