With intentions of cutting power plant emissions, last month the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its Cross-State Air Pollution Rule (CSAPR). However, an analysis by Bentek Energy LLC says the rule, an addendum to the Clean Air Act, would wreak havoc on on power and natural gas transmission grids if implemented as planned.

Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Corp. and cross-town rival Chesapeake Energy Corp., which both built their fortunes and their reserves by successfully drilling into shale gas formations, now have too much of a good thing and are building their liquids-rich portfolios to build their revenues, the companies said last week.

As fast as producers are developing new supplies in the Marcellus Shale, pipeline operators are lining up new pipes to criss-cross the Appalachians. Recently Inergy Midstream LLC reported on successful open seasons for two pipeline projects in the area, National Fuel Gas Supply Corp. announced an open season for new pipe capacity in central Pennsylvania, and NiSource Inc. said it is looking for partners for the largest plan so far, a $1.7 billion investment in two new Marcellus lines.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Thursday announced a new agreement with the United Kingdom’s Financial Services Authority (FSA) to strengthen cross border supervision of energy futures markets. At the same time the CFTC extended the new rules to ICE Futures Europe.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has given the green light for Calgary-based Suncor Energy Inc.’s friendly takeover of cross-town rival Petro-Canada. Suncor has a refining and gasoline retail business based in Colorado, and Petro-Canada has unconventional natural gas operations in the Lower 48 states. The C$19.6 billion (US$15.5 billion) merger, which would create Canada’s largest energy company, was announced in March (see Daily GPI, March 24). The transaction still requires approval by the Competition Bureau in Canada, and both companies have overlapping retail gasoline operations in Ontario.

Canada’s only 100% natural gas energy trust, Calgary-based Paramount Energy Trust (PET), said Tuesday it plans to buy cross-town explorer Profound Energy Inc. in a friendly stock transaction worth an estimated C$113 million (US$90 million).
