The cold spell currently enveloping Canada and most of the U.S. again propelled the spot market higher Thursday, but the advances were considerably smaller than the previous day’s spikes and were interspersed with flat to moderately lower numbers at a few points in the Gulf Coast and Midcontinent.

Most of East Keeps Rising; West Mainly Softer

Prices continued to rise at nearly all eastern points Tuesday, although by considerably smaller amounts than the soaring numbers seen the day before. However, a few touches of flatness were surfacing in the East, and a couple of Midcontinent pipes recorded drops of about a nickel.

Bearishly mild mid-May temperatures prevailing in most areas and abundant storage levels were matched up against a small screen gain on the previous Friday and the return of industrial demand from a weekend reduction.

EIA: Pipeline, Storage Capacity Additions Slow in 2003, 2004

Gas pipeline and storage expansions slowed considerably in 2003 in part because of customer creditworthiness issues, higher steel prices and a slow down in power generation development, according to a new report by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). EIA tallied 49 pipeline projects with 10 Bcf/d of pipeline capacity additions ($3.6 billion in investment), and nine storage projects adding 19 Bcf of working gas storage capacity in 2003.
