El Paso Corp.’s efforts to reduce debt continued with the announcement Tuesday that two transactions valued at $198 million total have been completed. In one transaction, El Paso completed the sale of four more power plants; in the other, the merchant energy subsidiary received the final $51 million installment on the sale of contracts related to the company’s Elba Island Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Georgia.

EnCana Completes Another Asset Sale, Moody’s Says More Needed

With the sale of mature oil-producing properties in east central and southern Alberta to Harvest Energy Trust for US$395 million, EnCana Corp. said Thursday it has completed the first tranche of asset sales that it announced following the completion of its merger with Tom Brown in April. The company now plans to sell additional assets over the next 12 months representing another 15,000-35,000 boe/d of production. The sales are needed, said Moody’s Investors Service last week, as the ratings agency downgraded its long-term debt rating warning of EnCana’s “aggressive production growth targets” and increased debt.

AEP Completes Sale of Texas Plants to Sempra-Equity Fund JV

American Electric Power (AEP) last Thursday said that its Texas Central Co. (TCC) subsidiary completed the sale of 3,813 MW of generating assets, including eight natural gas plants, one coal-fired plant and one hydro plant, to a joint venture of Sempra Energy Partners and Carlyle/Riverstone Global Energy and Power Fund for $430 million before adjustments. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce debt.
