Northwest Plans Improvements, Expansion

Northwest Pipeline put shippers on notice last week that itplans to undertake a system enhancement program and will begintaking requests for a pipeline expansion project. The enhancementprogram, which will involve adding pipeline looping andcompression, is designed in part to resolve a supply displacementproblem stemming from an expiring contract.

El Paso Energy Corp. completed its acquisition of Crystal GasStorage Inc. of Shreveport, LA. Each holder of Crystal Gas Storagecommon stock received $57 per share in cash in a deal worth $224.6million. “The Crystal assets provide the flexibility, highdeliverability, and multiple pipeline interconnects necessary tomeet the gas supply demands of new plants in the competitive powermarket,” said El Paso CEO William A. Wise.

Enogex Completes Transok Purchase

Enogex Inc. completed its acquisition of Transok LLC, a gatherer,processor and transporter of natural gas in Oklahoma andTexas. Enogex, a subsidiary of OGE Energy Corp., announced plans May17 to buy Transok from Houston-based Tejas Gas LLC, an affiliate ofShell Oil Co. for $701 million (See Daily GPI May 18, 1999).

Castle Energy Corp. of Radnor, PA, will pick up about 27.5 Bcfeof proved reserves, about 55% gas, when it completes the purchaseof essentially all of AmBrit’s oil and gas properties for about $22million.

Calling his own merchant underground natural gas storage fieldin northern California a “done deal,” a Calgary-based AlbertaEnergy official speculated that any competitors in developingnonutility, market-based storage “have quite a bit of work to do”to get a competing facility up and running. It was an indirectreference to a smaller, competing facility whose backers say theywill file with California regulators Oct. 1. (See Daily GPI, Sept.21)

PG&E Corp. Completes Twin Eastern Deals

San Francisco-based PG&E Corp. leap-frogged the continent tocomplete the $1.59 billion acquisition of New England ElectricSystem’s generating business, including hydro and gas-fired plantswith 5,100 MW of capacity. The acquisition was made by PG&Esubsidiary U.S. Generating Co.
