Amerada Hess Completes Triton Energy Purchase

Amerada Hess Corp., a major East Coast gasoline retailer, completed its acquisition of Triton Energy Ltd. by acquiring all of the validly tendered shares of the Dallas, TX-based independent producer. Amerada acquired Triton’s stock at $45/share, bringing the total value of the transaction to $3.2 billion. The deal includes the assumption of $500 million of Triton debt.

El Paso Completes Acquisition of Velvet Exploration

An El Paso Corp. subsidiary, El Paso Oil & Gas Canada Acquisition Inc., has completed the acquisition of Canadian independent Velvet Exploration Ltd., picking up approximately 41.9 million common shares, which equates to 96.7% of Velvet shares outstanding, with its offer of C$8.15 per share. The offer closed at the end of July. Cost of the acquisition, including US$52 million in debt, is estimated at about US$280 million.

Apache Makes Gulf Discovery, Completes Development Well

Houston-based Apache Corp. had a busy Wednesday as the company announced that it has discovered natural gas at Eugene Island Block 187 in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 45 miles offshore Louisiana. The company also reported that it has completed a “strong development well” from its South Timbalier 295 platform. Apache said both wells are in production.

Calpine Completes Acquisition of Otay Mesa Project

Calpine Corp. has completed the acquisition of the 500 MW Otay Mesa Generating Project near the Mexican border from developer PG&E National Energy Group. The project, which is targeted for completion in mid-2003, is billed as the first new generating project in San Diego County in 30 years.

SoCal Edison Parent Completes $1.2B Debt Restructuring

After two closing dates failed to materialize earlier in the week, Edison International, parent to financially ailing Southern California Edison Co., announced Thursday its newly created nonutility financing arm has completed a $1.2 billion debt restructuring that will close Monday. Through a complicated set of transactions within the Edison family of companies, the net proceeds ultimately will be used by Edison International to pay off loans due this year.

Canadian Superior Completes Seismic in Nova Scotia

Moving a step closer to production, Calgary-based Canadian Superior Energy Inc. reported that it has completed the acquisition of 1,100 kilometers of high-resolution seismic coverage of its offshore Nova Scotia Marquis prospects and an additional 700 kilometers of seismic data in the immediate area from Geophysical Service Inc. (GSI) of Houston.
