Sierra Pacific Moves Closer to PGE Acquisition

A settlement was reached yesterday by Salem, OR-based SierraPacific Resources, the Oregon Public Utility Commission, industrialcustomers and consumer groups to allow Sierra Pacific to acquirePortland General Electric. The agreement calls for a six-yearfreeze on certain electricity prices and a $95 million credit pricefor PGE customers over the next seven years.

Southern Union Co. has gotten a thumbs up from the PennsylvaniaPublic Utility Commission (PPUC) for its pending mergers with threeNortheast utility companies — Fall River Gas Co., ProvidenceEnergy Corp. and Valley Resources Inc. The approval, which comesthree months after Southern Union’s application was first filed, isone of several required before the merger is approved. Still tocome are approvals from utility commissions in Rhode Island,Massachusetts and Missouri, state legislatures and variousregulators in the affected states.

The competing Gulfstream andBuccaneer pipeline projects, which would extend from Mobile, AL,across the Gulf of Mexico to the west coast of Florida and tomarkets across the Florida peninsula, are neck and neck in theirregulatory race after receiving preliminary approvals onnon-environmental grounds from the Federal Energy RegulatoryCommission (FERC) yesterday.
