Mackenzie Report A Milestone, Not the Finish Line

After five years of study an environmental and socioeconomic Joint Review Panel for the Mackenzie Gas Project (MGP) cleared the regulatory path toward a possible go-ahead for the mega-pipeline to tap far North reserves, rejecting environmentalists arguments to dump the whole project and coming up with a suggested compromise in the decades-long land claims battle with the Canadian aboriginal Deh Cho Dene Nation. The panel’s recommendation that the National Energy Board (NEB) approve the project sets the stage for about nine months of consideration by that agency.

A $7.4 billion deal by a consortium of private investors to acquire Bellevue, WA-based Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and take it private cleared a final regulatory hurdle last Tuesday when the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) on a split 2-1 vote gave a heavily conditioned approval. WUTC approved a multi-party settlement from last summer that included its own staff.

Nymex Members Vote in Favor of CME Merger

The merger of CME Group and Nymex Holdings cleared its largest hurdle Monday afternoon as Nymex’s shareholders and its 816 seatholders voted to accept the merger proposal. With the approval out of the way, the closing date of the union, which has been valued recently anywhere between $7.9 billion to $8.4 billion, is scheduled to take place on Friday (Aug. 22), when Nymex Holdings will merge with and into CMEG NY Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of CME Group.
