Oregon LNG Project Gets Land-Use Win

The Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA) last Friday dismissed a challenge to one of the local permits issued for the development of the proposed Jordan Cove liquefied natural gas (LNG) project and related interstate-connecting pipeline. The appeal dealt with one of three Coos County permits issued to the LNG project — this one being for development of the marine docking facilities.

A federal appeals court — responding to a challenge filed by a coalition of conservation groups to a decision by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to allow construction of a natural gas pipeline in western Colorado — has issued a temporary injunction to halt the pipeline’s construction until a Wednesday (June 18) hearing.

FERC Rejects Challenge to Jurisdictional Claim in Gas Futures Market

FERC Friday rejected a challenge by failed hedge fund Amaranth Advisors and affiliates to FERC’s claim that it has jurisdiction to sanction manipulative trading of natural gas futures contracts when that activity significantly affects prices in the physical gas market, over which the agency has exclusive jurisdiction.

Slowing Growth, Regulation Hit Southwest Gas; 2Q Loss Reported

Quarterly results were essentially flat when excluding nonrecurring items for Southwest Gas Corp. which faces the challenge of fine tuning its strategy for maximizing its regulatory climate and gaining rate changes. Last week the Las Vegas, NV-based company reported a loss of $337,000, or 1 cent/share, for the second quarter, compared with profits of $3.7 million, or 9 cents/share, for the same period last year.

The National Energy Board cited the growing aggregate demand of all shippers combined with the expected decline of supplies from the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin as driving its decision.
