Coastal Buys Utah Midstream Assets

Complementing its integrated operations in Northeast Utah andwestern Colorado, Coastal Field Services, Coastal’s midstreamdivision, bought the Bluebell and Altonah gathering systems andprocessing plants located in the Duchesne and Uintah counties ofUtah. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Norse Pipeline Buys Columbia’s Project Penny

Columbia Gas Transmission sold its Project Penny gatheringpipeline and compressor facilities in Pennsylvania and New York toNorse Pipeline for $21.5 million. Norse is an affiliate of SchansonEnergy LLC, the energy investment arm of Schanson CapitalManagement of Los Angeles, and Nornew Inc., an integrated oil andgas exploration company focused mainly on the Appalachian Basin andthe Maritime provinces in Atlantic Canada. Norse Pipeline’sdomestic operations are based in Houston and Jamestown, NY.

Investor Group Buys TNP Enterprises

TNP Enterprises, the parent company of Texas-New Mexico PowerCo. (TNMP), was bought by a group of investors headed by WilliamCatacosinos, the former CEO of Long Island Lighting Co., for $1billion, including assumed debt, the parties announced yesterday.The deal, which TNP said was the first leveraged buyout of anelectric utility, is expected to close in six to nine months.

Quicksilver Buys Unocal MI Properties

Quicksilver Resources Inc. of Fort Worth, TX, closed on theacquisition of substantially all of Unocal Corp.’s Spirit Energy 76unit’s gas and oil assets in Michigan. Total consideration was $27million in cash and 404,381 shares of Quicksilver common stock. Thetransaction is effective January 1, 1999.

UtiliCorp Buys Second Missouri Utility in Two Months

UtiliCorp United added another Missouri-based utility to its recent acquisitions last week, buying Empire District Electric Co. in a stock and cash transaction valued at $800 million, including assumption of debt. The purchase comes only two months after UtiliCorp bought St. Joseph Light &Power for $270 million (see NGI, March 8).

CMS Buys Large LNG Shipments for Trunkline

CMS Corp.’s marketing division, CMS Marketing, Services and Trading (MST), completed an agreement last Tuesday to purchase a total of 9.3 Bcf of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the North West Shelf LNG project in Australia for delivery to the CMS Trunkline LNG facility in Lake Charles, LA. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

CMS Corp.’s marketing division, CMS Marketing, Services and Trading (MST), completed an agreement Tuesday to purchase a total of 9.3 Bcf of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the North West Shelf LNG project in Australia for delivery to the CMS Trunkline LNG facility in Lake Charles, LA. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The announcement marks the second major deal CMS has struck to take advantage of its purchase of Eastern Panhandle Pipeline and Trunkline Gas Co. from Duke Energy last year.

Energy East Corp., parent of New York State Electric &Gas, offered to buy Connecticut Energy Corp. (CNE) for $617 million Friday, paving the way for the combined utility to add 160,000 new gas customers and at the same time continuing to shrink the number of pure gas utilities. The board of directors for each company has agreed to the deal.
