Given a little boost from the modestly firmer expiration of October futures and an almost imperceptible return of higher temperatures in the South, the September daily market ended Wednesday with a near-repeat of Tuesday’s trading — prices nearly all within a narrow range around unchanged.

The modest Midwest warming trend that had helped boost most of the market slightly a day earlier proved to be short-lived, and so did the small rally as prices fell at a majority of locations Thursday.

Natural gas futures received a temporary boost on Thursday morning after the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that only 27 Bcf was injected into underground stores for the week ending Aug. 13. The bullish momentum was unsustainable as the September contract later made a new low for the move before closing at $4.171, down 6.8 cents from Wednesday’s finish.

With few exceptions, hot temperatures continue to dominate much of the North American weather outlook. That, along with a little boost from the previous day’s 3.4-cent rise by June futures, pushed prices higher at nearly all trading locations Wednesday.
