Pipelines, Producers Argue Investments, Returns

Producers are eating a bigger slice of the revenue pie,pipelines claim. Pipelines, however, are piling up a much greaterreturn for a much smaller investment, producers retort. And that’sjust the beginning of the arguments spawned by FERC’s probing thepossibility of lighter-handed regulation of pipelines, includingnegotiated terms and conditions.

Shedding E&P Spares MCN Bigger Loss

MCN Energy Group’s plan to shed exploration and productionoperations drained gallons of red ink from its 1998 bottom line,about $273 million worth. Still the company finished the year witha net loss. MCN reported a net loss of $6.2 million, compared withearnings of $112.2 million in 1997. Including results from theE&P unit – discontinued in anticipation of sale – MCN reporteda net loss for 1998 of $279 million, compared with earnings of$142.3 million in 1997. All figures include special charges.

MA Utilities Combining to Form $4.4B Company

In yet another instance where bigger is believed to be better inthe deregulated energy marketplace, Boston Edison parent BEC Energyand Cambridge, MA-based gas and power holding company CommonwealthEnergy System plan to merge in a cash and stock deal. Thetransaction also represents the acquisition of gas assets byelectric BEC.

Williams Assumes Full Control of EnergyVision

Williams took a bigger jump into the energy marketing businessyesterday by announcing it has acquired full ownership ofEnergyVision by purchasing the 50% interest in the company that washeld by BEC Energy. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
