Union Gas Ltd. is taking bids through 1 p.m. ET Thursday on between 1 and 2 Bcf of Peak Storage service at its Dawn market hub. Capacity awards will be made within half an hour later, and injections may begin Friday. Winter 2001-02 withdrawals will be on an interruptible basis. Enbridge Gas New Brunswick (EGNB) has entered into a three yeardeal whereby Green Bay, WI,-based WPS Energy Services will assumecontrol of EGNB’s approximate 11 MMcf/d transportation capacity onMaritimes & Northeast Pipeline. EGNB had to unload the capacitybecause as the distributor it could not also sell gas.

FERC Awards Itself High Marks for ’99 Performance

In a fiscal year 1999 performance report card submitted toCongress and the White House, the Federal Energy RegulatoryCommission gave itself high marks for furthering competition in thenatural gas and electricity markets, citing the mega gas rule(Order 637), the RTO decision (Order 2000) and its FERC Firstinitiative as proof of its progress.

HL&P Facing Hefty Jury Awards

Reliant Energy’s Houston Lighting & Power (HL&P) couldbe on the hook for millions depending upon punitive damagesassessed in a case that has hit the utility with $4.2 million inactual damages awarded to three Texas cities. Lawyers for theplaintiffs last week suggested a punitive award in the range of $40million would be appropriate.

DOE’s Richardson Awards New Mexico Contract

The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology has received aplum from a favorite son, new Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, whoannounced the award of a $1.5 million DOE contract to determine thebest way to boost gas production from some of New Mexico’s mostdifficult geologic formations.
