Houston-based Southwestern Energy Co., which up to now has focused its exploration efforts in the Fayetteville Shale of Arkansas, on Monday said it would test new hydrocarbon basins in New Brunswick (NB) after winning bids in a tender call for licenses covering more than 2.5 million acres (1.02 million hectares).

The gas supply outlook has shifted from a thirst for liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports to reliance on maturing and emerging shale plays in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Pennsylvania; new pipelines and capacity expansions reconfigure continental gas flows; and increasing gas-fired power generation elevates summer demand peaks. Gas storage developers are in the midst of it all.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. and BP America intend to form a joint venture that gives BP a 25% interest in Chesapeake’s Fayetteville Shale assets in Arkansas for $1.9 billion, the companies said last week. This marks the third transaction in less than two months involving the sale of Chesapeake’s shale assets, two of which have been with BP.

As new supplies of gas from the Barnett Shale and Bossier Sands in Texas, the Haynesville Shale in northwest Louisiana, the Woodford Shale in southeastern Oklahoma and the Fayetteville Shale in northeast Arkansas continue to ramp up, Perryville, located in northeastern Louisiana, finds itself ideally situated as a gathering place to store and move the gas to markets in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.
