Islander East to Appeal Lower Court Ruling That Dealt Blow to Pipe

Sponsors of the beleaguered Islander East pipeline project apparently have not given up on the proposed Connecticut-to-Long Island pipeline. In a letter to FERC Monday, Islander East said it plans to appeal within 40 days a federal court decision last month that many thought was a potentially fatal blow to the project.

With the sage grouse population apparently declining as quickly as coalbed methane (CBM) development expands in the Powder River Basin, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office in Wyoming is attempting a friendly chicken dance with the region’s oil and natural gas operators, indicating that applications for permits to drill outside the delicate habitat will be given priority.

Kelliher Believed to be Target of ‘Annoying Secret Hold’ in Senate

Apparently one or more senators have placed holds on the nomination of Joseph T. Kelliher for a second term at FERC, a Senate committee spokesman said. The holds prevent the nomination, which has been approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, from coming up for a vote on the Senate floor.

February settlement-day bears apparently went back into hibernation Tuesday as March natural gas futures broke back to the upside, soaring 80.3 cents to end the day at $7.740, and crude oil futures jumped $3/bbl.

Rockies, Plains Blizzards Generate Cash Gains

Just a day after sources had virtually nothing to talk about but how little gas demand there was, some more gas demand apparently showed up. The cash market recorded increases at virtually all points Wednesday (one was essentially flat) as blizzard conditions in the Rockies and Plains states were giving a boost to heating load.

Apparently bewildered by a substantial drop in their company’s stock price, management at Denver-based PRB Energy Inc. decided to make the best of things and repurchase up to 10%, or 750,000, of outstanding common shares.

Tug, Barges Strike Louisiana Gas Pipe; Two Dead

A tug boat and two barges apparently struck a natural gas pipeline in Louisiana Thursday, killing two people and critically injuring at least two others. Three other people were confirmed missing by state police. The accident occurred near Gulfport Energy Corp.’s West Cote Blanche Bay production facility, located near Baldwin, LA.

Survey Says High Bills Have Made LDC Customers Cranky

There may be a silver lining in this year’s plunge in gas prices: it may prevent rioting by the rate-paying villagers. Apparently, consumers have had just about enough of rising bills. Downward adjustments to rates couldn’t be coming at a better time.
